Frackers follow tobacco's lead in funding research

post-gazette.com -- Pennsylvania remains the largest state without a tax on natural gas production, thanks in part to a study released under the banner of Penn State University.

The 2009 report predicted drillers would shun Pennsylvania if new taxes were imposed, and lawmakers cited it the following year when they rejected a 5 percent tax proposed by then-Gov. Ed Rendell.

"As an advocacy tool, it worked," Michael Wood, research director with the nonprofit Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center in Harrisburg, said in an interview. "If people wanted to find a reason to vote against having the industry taxed in that way, that gave them reason to do it."

What the study didn't do was note that it was sponsored by gas drillers and led by an economist, now at the University of Wyoming, with a history of pro

Universities need money. Is anyone truly surprised that research tends to support those with the deepest purses?

Why does this surprise any thinking person? Follow the money....and see who is funding any University research.

Obviously both PA and TX have their hands deeply into Big Oil/Gas pockets! That is not objective research!

What else but the perfect industry shill cookbook of worst practices for all industry spin doctors. The Karl Rove School of Spin and Dirty Tricks and the Enron Graduate School are also quite popular for shills and spin doctors! Attendance is mandatory for all industry lobbyists as well.

Thanks for excellent news articles today teafortwo. It is also wonderful to see the PD has been enjoying his time in the very well engineered and made Chevy Volt. Will wonders never cease!

MidNJ: Cigarettes cause lung cancer and heart disease??? Not according to RJ Reynolds

It's all too true that money from these industries will greatly bias any "research" being conducted and published. Any negative data and findings will never be published as typically stipulated in the contracts signed by these corporations and academicians (that is, the corporation has final say for all released of information, especially publications).

This only underscores my posting on another article about the relationship between corporate interests and professors. One has to look at who is funding the research and if there are payouts for certain conclusions.

Wonder how much money the members of Congress, who supported the NO tax, got from the natural gas companies.

Good for Pennsylvania, by not imposing a tax on natural gas the state discovered that the gas industry created more jobs and those people pay taxes at a higher rate which means more revenue than what the gas tax would have generated. This a win win for the state.

This would be a good way to control how many Fractor/Drilling company's move into an area after too many move in tax them then you won't have horrendous problems like in BC and Alberta
