A 'natural' solution for transportation

physorg.com -- As the United States transitions away from a primarily petroleum-based transportation industry, a number of different alternative fuel sources—ethanol, biodiesel, electricity and hydrogen—have each shown their own promise. Hoping to expand the pool even further, researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory have begun to investigate adding one more contender to the list of possible energy sources for light-duty cars and trucks: compressed natural gas (CNG).

Compressed natural gas is composed primarily of methane, which when compressed occupies less than one percent of the volume it occupies at standard pressure. CNG is typically stored in cylindrical tanks that would be carried onboard the vehicles it fuels.

The technology of running internal combustion engines on methane is at least a century old now. The problem with proliferating CNG vehicles has nothing to do with technology, its an economic issue of distribution. While this story sounds "nice", its just a waste of money, better spent just building more fueling stations instead. This project just creates make work jobs.

And if you look at feed prices as of late, you might find them to be excessively high. Regular horse feed has doubled in the past 3 years since the price of corn has gone through the roof - not just b/c of EtOH, but b/c China had low harvests and bought massive quantities. Oh ya, corn is also the reason for dog food to have gone up...

I remember 509 years ago Con Edison switched NYC from manufacture gas largely carbon monoxide which they extracted from coal fires in their power plants. My grandmother still had a gas refridgerator built into her stove ;-) Con Ed switched from Man. gas to Nat. Gas just about the time their first Nuke plant was on line!] Neutral Sweeden had to run cars on CNG because they could not acquire petrol from either Allies or Axis side in the ar!

Hydrogen and some other fuels are very expensive to make and use or Not practical, when the price of hydrogen comes way down it will be a very good fuel for vehicles. Cheaper alternative fuels from algae, bacteria, the biomass or the waste stream. Cheaper renewable energy from solar, wind, hydro, thermal, tidal and/or nuclear to replace the oil that will not be there one day. NO electricity produced from coal, oil or natural gas. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

Even though it is admitted that CNG burns cleaner and that we have an abundance of natural gas, this is too rational for the "green" lobby to accept. There are still legitimate hurdles to overcome (like the distribution of CNG across America, etc.), but I have complete confidence that the free market can solve these problems. The first step is that we need to abolish the Federal EPA and allow the State Environmental agencies solve any harmful consequences which might arise from this development.
